Gentle Japanese Acupuncture & The Common Cold, Part 1

One of the things I like treating most is the common cold.

When you get it just right, treating people for colds is very rewarding. Why?

As an acupuncturist, I spend a lot of time treating chronic conditions. Every week, my patients will come in feeling better than they did before. Their sleep gets better, their sinuses clear up, their nausea goes away, their knees get better etc etc... And I love to see it. I enjoy all the treatments I give.

It's the nature of the beast, though, that these chronic conditions will take some time to resolve (because they took a long time to arrive). Patients recover, but it's not flashy and sudden as a rule.

Colds and flus, though - they're different. Short, sharp and nasty, the onset of the common cold is the most common acute problem I treat.

It's during the treatment of acute disease like this that a good acupuncturist can produce seemingly miraculous results. This is because there is a lot of energy and dynamism involved in acute disease - the body's state of health is changing very rapidly. Things are moving very fast.

If the acupuncturist gets their diagnosis exactly right and applies an appropriate treatment, they can harness the tremendous potential energy of a cold or a flu and turn it very quickly into good health.

Everyone knows about the immune system. What is less commonly known is that there is a energetic component to human immunity. In oriental medicine, this is known as defensive ki  or wei qi.

Defensive ki circulates around the exterior of the body, at the level of the skin and body hair. It is hot and aggressive energy that is constantly active - constantly buffering the external environment. It keeps us warm and keeps out colds, flus and other diseases.

Two major things can go wrong here:

1. If we are tired, ill, overworked, not eating well etc... then our defensive ki can become deficient. This allows colds and flus to strike easily and frequently.

2. We can be struck by a strong pathogen that overwhelms our defensive ki, even if we are in decent overall health.

Acupuncture is a medicine that has been designed from the ground up to be effective at the level of defensive ki. Acupuncture can improve both the quality and quantity of your defensive qi, giving your body the power it needs to fight back against colds and flus.

Next time I will describe a recent treatment I administered for a cold, so stay tuned.

Are you coming down with a cold right now? Have you been battling with a cold longer than seems normal? Maybe the cold has been and gone for you, but it's left a cough, sinus congestion and other delightful parting gifts?
